June 2023: Burundi ran a national vaccination effort against polio

Burundi ran a national vaccination effort against polio June 10-13, targeting nearly 3 million children under age 7. The door-to-door campaign—the country’s first national campaign against polio since 2011—came in response to 13 detections of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) reported since January. In March, Burundi declared a national public health emergency in response to a polio outbreak, the country’s first in more than 30 years. Two additional campaign rounds are scheduled for July and September. WHO Burundi; VOA News; RegionWeek
