May 2019: DRC expands Ebola vaccine campaign

The Democratic Republic of the Congo expanded its Ebola vaccine campaign in May 2019 as cases in the country continue to mount rapidly. According to WHO’s latest update on 23 May, the outbreak has reached a total of 1,866 cases. The expansion followed WHO’s new recommendation this month to use three-ring vaccination along with a dose-sparing strategy to extend the vaccine further. Meanwhile, threats of death and more violence against outbreak personnel have kept the region on shaky ground. Media reported that villagers in eastern parts of the country killed a health worker engaged in Ebola outbreak work and looted a treatment center. WHO Ebola update; WHO recommendation; France24
