Nigeria kicked off a nationwide campaign against polio in May, targeting 7.2 million children under age 5. Several cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 have been reported in 2023, including two in May in Zamfara and Sokoto states. In Zamfara alone, the campaign aimed to reach 1,559,000 children using the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 for children under age 5 and fractional IPV doses for children 6 months to 5 years.
