The Health Campaign Effectiveness Coalition Leadership Team meeting on October 23, 2025, was filled with laughter, confetti (the virtual kind!), and meaningful reflection as we marked an important leadership transition: the retirement of our founding Chair, Dr. Hamid Jafari, and the enthusiastic welcoming of our new Chair, Dr. Maria Rebollo Polo.
Five Years of Visionary Leadership
Dr. Hamid Jafari, Director of Polio Eradication at WHO EMRO, has been the anchor for the Coalition since its inception in early 2020. Looking back, it’s clear that his commitment was a monumental gift to the effort. During his tenure, Hamid prioritized the Coalition’s mission through COVID, turbulent times, and a “crazy travel schedule,” always providing sage advice, and fostering this unique platform. Upon handing over the gavel, Hamid shared a powerful reflection.
He also delivered a challenge to the team: The Coalition is a unique platform—it is the “only show right now for integration”—and its future must focus on how to bring in other programs facing similar pressures to “do more with less resources.”
Hello to the New Chair, Dr. Maria Rebollo Polo
Following Hamid’s inspiring remarks, the floor was passed to Dr. Maria Rebollo Polo, Lead for the Global Program for Onchocerciasis Elimination and Scabies Control at WHO, who steps into the role of Chair. Maria immediately echoed Hamid’s strong vision, and she also emphasizes the need to move the role of the leadership team from consultation to ownership and action.
Maria’s focus is on driving the Coalition’s intended change and making our work impactful at the country level. She recognizes that right now, amid the upheaval caused by the global health funding crisis, the Coalition’s work is extremely relevant. We have the knowledge and tools to help answer the calls for reduced fragmentation, better coordination among global health organizations, and transition from a donor to a country-led approach.
“Each of us, as representatives of our respective institutions, has a vital role to play in spreading this movement within our organizations — transforming it into policy and ensuring it reaches countries and communities. We must do so with one united voice that is people-centered, country-led, and sustainable, and with the same collaborative spirit that has brought us together in this coalition.”
The Coalition extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Hamid Jafari for his dedication and leadership, and offers its full support and enthusiasm to Dr. Maria Rebollo Polo as she takes the helm for this exciting new chapter.
