Dr. Nevin Wilson is currently the head of the unit managing HIV, hepatitis, STIs, tuberculosis, malaria and vector-borne diseases, and neglected tropical diseasesĀ at the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
Until April 2024, Nevin led the regional project management unit (PMU) managing the implementation of the Global Fundās Middle East Response grant to the UN Migration Agency (IOM). Based out of Amman, the PMU managed Global Fund support to Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Yemen since 2017. This differentiated investment from the Global Fund, through a multi-country grant, leveraged flexibilities in grant management and implementation, mobilized additional resources to these countries, prioritized vulnerable and mobile populations, strengthened local health systems and innovative service delivery platforms, optimized laboratory and diagnostic networks, consolidated supply chains, added value for money and contributed to better data and surveillance for the three diseases.
From 2014 to 2017, Nevin worked as an independent international consultant supporting various agencies including the UN in designing and developing targeted interventions to improve case finding, case management and prevention for the three diseases in different countries in Asia, SE Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Wilson served with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (The Union) from 2004 to 2014 in various capacities including as the regional director of The Unionās first regional office for Southeast Asia in New Delhi India. During this time, he led the implementation of the largest Global Fund grant for civil society in India ā Project Axshya, expanding the reach of Indiaās national tuberculosis control programme to hard-to-reach and vulnerable populations in 23 states. During this time, he also oversaw the launch and implementation of the Global Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use in high-priority countries including India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
Between 2000 and 2003, Nevin served with the India office of the World Health Organization supporting the expansion of Indiaās Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme in the state of Tamil Nadu. Nevin started his career in 1990, as a primary care provider, serving with a local NGO, working with hill tribes in Indiaās Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats. He is a graduate from the Madras Medical College obtaining his MBBS in 1986 and a post-graduate diploma in leprosy from the same college in 1990. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and has supported the setting up of The Unionās Centre for Operations Research that has led to the building of local capacity to analyze programme data to inform programme policies and decisions through peer-reviewed research.
