Ahmadu Yakubu, BMBCh, MsC

Dr. Ahmadu Yakubu is a Senior Adviser Health and Team Lead of Accelerated Immunization Initiatives and Emergencies team with the Immunization Section of UNICEF Headquarters. He devotes his time to supporting response to outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases, including in fragile and conflict settings, and is a member of the International Coordinating Group managing stockpiles of vaccines for response to Meningitis, Cholera, Yellow Fever, and Ebola Virus Disease. Ahmadu also Co-Chairs the Measles and Rubella Partnership and the IA2030 Outbreaks Task Team. He is in the Leadership Team of the Health Campaign Effectiveness Coalition. Formerly, Ahmadu was working on immunization coverage and equity and was the Focal Person for maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE) monitoring and evaluation at WHO Headquarters, Regional Immunization Specialist – UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO), Medical Officer World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa. In these areas of work Ahmadu has engaged with over 60 Lower- and Lower-Middle-Income-Countries at sub-national level to push immunization and the broader primary health care agenda. Prior to these international engagements over the past 24 years, Ahmadu worked in his country, Nigeria, in various capacities including as Epidemiologist in Bauchi State and then as Director Primary Health Care and Disease Control in Gombe State. Ahmadu obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the University of Jos, Nigeria, in 1986 and his Master of Science in Public Health in Developing Countries from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, in 1993.
