Glossary Term: Acceptability

The culture of individuals, minorities, peoples and communities, sensitive to gender and life-cycle requirements, as well as being designed to respect confidentiality and improve the health status of those concerned.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines acceptability as
“the culture of individuals, minorities, peoples and communities, sensitive to gender and life-cycle requirements, as well as being designed to respect confidentiality and improve the health status of those concerned.” The WHO uses General Comment 14 from the 2003 Interim Report of the Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the Right of Everyone to Enjoy the Highest Attainable Standard of Physical and Mental Health. This comment is authored by Paul Hunt, a Professor of Law, Member of the Human Rights Centre, and United Nations Special Rapporteur.
