Glossary Term: Community Engagement

The process by which community benefit organizations and individuals build a long term relationship with collective vision for the benefit of the community.

The World Health Organization’s Community Engagement Module defines community engagement as
“the process by which community benefit organizations and individuals build a long term relationship with collective vision for the benefit of the community.” The presentation was designed to communicate links between Health promotion, social mobilization, and community engagement; describe why community engagement is essential for effective emergency risk communication, and to list actions for community engagement. For the Coalition’s purposes, it provides a working definition of community engagement. This definition of community engagement draws on Dr. Glenn Laverack’s The Pocket Guide To Health Promotion, a practical guide to health promotion for students and practitioners.
