Coalition STAC Chair Dr. Jim Lavery Featured on iCHORDS Podcast

Dr. Jim Lavery, Chair of the Health Campaign Effectiveness Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), recently participated in the iCHORDS podcast The Last Mile. In the episode, titled “It’s Time for Fairness in Research Partnerships,” Dr. Lavery discusses his career within the neglected tropical diseases space, as well as his work with the Research Fairness Initiative (RFI). “It’s really a self-reflection framework for organizations to go and do a deep dive, and to look at their policies, look at their practices, and ask themselves the difficult questions: ‘Are we functioning as a fair partner? Are there obstacles to how we’re functioning as a fair partner? And are there things we can do to improve our fairness as a partner?'” said Lavery.

The 34-minute episode is the second in the new podcast series, which launched in November 2021. The series highlights the increasing need for social and behavioral sciences to help achieve the goals outlined in the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) roadmap and particularly ‘the last miles’ of NTD elimination and control.

“What we’re really trying to do is analogous to what biostatisticians do,” said Lavery. “Biostatisticians help us try to express very complex ideas in mathematical reasoning. And what we try to do is address and help explain and articulate these issues in ethical reasoning.”
